Legion Announces 2020 Scholarship Opportunity

By Suellen Reitz

Legion Writer

American Legion Post 149 is proud to announce the third year of $1,000 scholarships for Pickens County veterans and students with a third scholarship being added this year for awardees who will be entering an accredited two or four year college, technical or vocational school this year.

Two of the scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors, (including home schooled), whose parent or grandparent is a Pickens County resident or currently serving in the United States Military. Students do not have to reside in Pickens County. “We added the second student scholarship because we had so many applications last year. All of them were very worthy. The Legion ultimately did award two students because there were no veteran applications. This year we hope to have both students and a veteran receive the scholarship for continued education,” spoke Scholarship Chairman, Steve Hammer.

Winning entries for high school seniors will be selected based on the student’s goals and objectives, academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community/church involvement, teacher recommendation and financial need. Application deadline for the student scholarship is March 2, 2020.

Veterans applying for the $1,000 scholarship must be a resident of Pickens and be a United States military veteran or currently serving on active duty. Winning applicant will be based on his/her goals and objectives, community/church involvement, employer recommendation and financial need. Deadline for the Veteran Scholarship is March 31, 2020.

Application forms for seniors are available at Pickens High Counseling Office or the Chamber of Commerce. Veterans application forms are also at the Chamber. All applications must include a DD214 showing proof of veteran status (unless currently serving active military), letter of acceptance from the school they will be attending, and a letter of recommendation from a current or recent teacher. Veterans must include a letter of recommendation from a current or recent employer. Home school students may submit a senior profile/resume. If school acceptance letter is not yet available, it can be mailed separately not later than April 15. Students are also asked to include a current transcript with SAT or ACT scores. Veterans should include a copy of high school transcript. Full details for scholarships can be found on application form.

The scholarship program offered by Legion Post 149 is only one of many ways service is provided to veterans, their families and the community of Pickens County. Any questions should be directed to the legion scholarship chairman Steve Hammer @

About Us

Our Post

Our post is made up of  veterans in Pickens County, Georgia. We served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces during the war eras of WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lebanon/Grenada, Panama, and Gulf War/War On Terrorism.

Our History

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members, and communities, the Legion has evolved from a group of war weary veterans of  World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States.

Our Mission

We are the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our community.  We advocate patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.
