Georgia Boys State is a comprehensive one week course in state and local government and is a program of the American Legion Department of Georgia. The date for the program is June 8-14, 2025 and will be held at Valdosta State University in Valdosta.
The American Legion has certain qualifications for prospective Boys State citizens. Following are the recommended guidelines employed by most Boys State programs:
Students in high school are considered. Previous participants of a Boys State competition are not allowed to attend a second session. Only those who illustrate leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service in their schools and community should be considered. Merit and ability are the basis for evaluation during the actual citizens selection process.
Boys State competitions are in compliance with federal handicap laws. Most programs require a medical/parental consent certificate signed by a parent and registered doctor.
The selection process often differs in Legion departments.
The ideal method is for schools to recommend lists of eligible candidates to local Legion posts. The post would then conduct interviews and select their representative(s) for the program.
Georgia Girls State is a National program of the American Legion Auxiliary. It is a course of instruction in, as well as, a practical application of, the fundamental principles and procedures of city, county, and state government under the American system. A session, usually lasting five days, is conducted by each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, with the top-ranking high school girls as citizens. Under the guidance of skilled counselors and other staff members who are leading citizens, girls learn and then practice through self-government, the duties, responsibilities, and privileges of American citizenship.
Georgia Girls State will be held on the campus of Valdosta State University. The dorm's name is Georgia Hall. Report to Georgia Hall between 1:00 and 3:30 on Sunday, June 8, 2025. Make arrangements to depart on Friday, June 13, 2025 by 1:00 PM. https://www.georgiagirlsstate.org
Two representatives from each of the 49 Boys States represent their state at Boys Nation in Washington, where the young leaders receive an education on the structure and function of federal government.
The first Boys Nation – then called Boys Forum of National Government – convened at American University in Washington in August 1946. The 1946 American Legion National Convention adopted the event as an official youth activity. Three years later, it became American Legion Boys Nation.
At the event, each delegate acts as a senator from his Boys State. The young lawmakers caucus at the beginning of the session, then organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills submitted by program delegates.
Senators learn the proper method of handling bills, according to U.S. Senate rules. Participation in the political process is emphasized throughout the week, including organization of party conventions and nominating and electing a president and vice president.
The week of government training also includes lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, national shrines, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators meet with elected officials from their home states.
High school juniors who attend an American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State program this summer and are a direct descendant (or legally adopted child) of a military veteran may be eligible for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship.
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is available for high school juniors who participate in the current session of American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State and are a direct descendant (or legally adopted child) of a U.S. military veteran who served honorably on active duty during a period of war (April 6, 1917-Nov. 11, 1918; or Dec. 7, 1941, until a date as determined by Congress).
The 2025 Samsung American Legion Scholarship application is online.
All applications must be submitted using the online application system. Scholarship applicants must complete and submit their online application prior to 11:59 p.m. (local time) of Day 1 of their respective American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program.
The scholarship awards up to $10,000 for undergraduate studies (e.g., room and board, tuition and books). Each applicant is selected according to his or her involvement in school and community activities, academic record and financial need.
A Boys and Girls State participant from each state is selected as a finalist for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship. During the American Legion’s Fall Meetings in October 2025, the Committee on Youth Education will select the scholarship winners. All scholarship recipients will be notified of their award.
